Throw out Bearing Issues

My Toyota FJ Cruiser is back in the shop this week. The goal is to resolve the problem with the throw out bearing making noise as well as some issues with syncro not working well. After getting a call from the service manager that they had the transmission out I stopped by to shoot a few photos.

Sleeve that the TO bearing runs on

The throw out bearing has again worn a groove in the sleeve that it rides on.  This issue is supposed to be fixed with a new synthetic lube that is being used on the sleeve.  Only time will tell if this is a fix that works.

As for the transmission, they found the engagement teeth for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd worn. Due to the cost involved in the repair Toyota is shipping a new transmission and bell housing to my dealer for install later this week.

Some of the engagement teeth showing wear

With 40K on the FJ I am also going to have the pressure plate replaced.

I look forward to the return of my FJ with what I hope is a fix to these problems.

  1. what kind of noise was it making and from where? Mine has a hum in the right rear and the shop thinks I’m crazy.

  2. Gosh, i hate to see this TO bearing business. I read your first post where the dealer said it was an improperly machined pilot shaft, so a new bell housing was installed. Yet it has failed again. I can’t believe it has to do with the lube (in fact lubing those areas could end up contaminating the clutch disc friction material). I’ve been driving 4×4’s and muscle cars for 40 years and most of them had stick shifts. I never put lube on the pilot shaft and throwout bearings never wore out. This whole thing is puzzling. Have you had any further troubles with this ?
(I ask because last May I bought a new ’09 FJ with a stick shift. Now I’m really scared to perform any mods on it because I’m afraid they’ll blame a bad TO bearing on the mods.)

  3. checking in for an update. just picked up an ’07 FJ Toyota certified from the dealership last week, has the chirp. worried they’ll be less than enthusiastic about replacing both the bearing and the housing.
