The miles behind All Points West

I’ve been exploring the outdoors for as long as I can remember. I grew up spending time outside in Aspen, Colorado, in the 1960s, and I’ve been heading for the mountains, backroads, and places in between ever since.

For many years, this website was My FJ Cruiser. Our first Toyota FJ Cruiser, the Blue Burro, was totaled in a rollover. We went on to build the White Knight for the expedition trips we love. Those vehicles took us across the Southwest, from California to Texas and a lot of country in between. Their trips, modifications, and equipment reviews remain part of the site.

What I enjoy most is getting out and discovering places, then sharing what we found and what we learned along the way. I write about the roads and trails, the little gems that make a trip memorable, and the gear that actually works after you’ve lived with it.

More time for the road

Now that Nancy and I are both retired, we have the opportunity to head out on many more adventures—and to stay out longer. We’ve moved beyond the FJ Cruisers, but we’re still interested in the same things: independent travel, remote places, and the freedom to see what’s around the next bend.

The vehicles we travel in

Our beige INEOS Grenadier with black roof rack parked by pine trees on a rocky trail

The Grenadier is our newer adventure vehicle. I’m slowly modifying it to suit the way we travel, learning what works, and documenting the changes as I go.

Our red Mercedes expedition truck and white camper, with our three Border Collies beside it

Our Mercedes expedition truck gives us another way to explore and stay out longer. It’s always a work in progress, with the next improvement or repair usually somewhere on the list.

A place for old and new stories

All Points West brings the FJ Cruiser years together with what comes next: expedition travel, maps, hands-on vehicle projects, gear, and adventures that aren’t always on four wheels—including the Paddling Down Missouri River journey.

I hope you’ll follow along. There are still plenty of roads we haven’t traveled.
