Cosmetic Blackout

On the white FJ Cruiser I do not like the look of the silver trim. During the build process I took on the process of blacking out all the silver trim pieces and adding additional black trim and components to the exterior of our Toyota FJ Cruiser. Our goal was to create a black on white look with this new white FJ Cruiser.

Elements that needed to be blacked out where; the grill, mirrors, and door handles. With the replacement of the bumpers with All Pro hardware, the silver end caps did not need to be painted The silver wheels were also replaced with black wheels.

I used Rust-Oleum Textured paint to finish the grill, mirror and door handles.

All the plastic parts where first sanded then an adhesive primer and then finished with the Rust-Oleum paint.

The hood blackout was added by using a large vinyl sticker and adds a great finishing touch.

The bumpers and other trail armor are all painted black which helps finish the black on white trimmed look. Other items that I am still considering for cosmetic changes are the front and rear blinkers with black LED lights.

  1. Thomas, instead of blacking out all that trim, you should have just chromed the snorkel. LOL!
It looks good. You’ve been working so fast, that I find myself disappointed when I check myfjcruiser.com in the mornings and there’s no new updates. I say to myself, “what the heck, it’s been 36 hrs. He should’ve posted a major new upgrade by now.” (meanwhile, my fj is a week over due for a simple oil change, and tire rotation.)

  2. Looks really good, I’m looking to achieve the same results. A few questions for you. What sheen of paint did you select to match? How is everything holding up so far? With the door handles being used regularly how are they wearing? Did you apply a clear coat finish to the parts? Thanks.

  3. How much would it cost to paint the end caps, bumpers, grill, mirrors and handles flat black? Also how much would it be to paint the roof flat black?

  4. I would like to do the same for my 2012 white FJ. I wanted to find out where you ordered your parts from:
    – grill
    – door handles
    – rear view mirrors

  5. We met at the Overland Expo in AZ and I forgot to ask you about the blackout paint work. After 2 years how are the door handles holding their blackout paint? It looks like a set of OEM Team Trail Edition black handles costs about $60US. Wondering if it’s worth it for a high usage part like door handles. Your thoughts?
