Reno Divide Roll Over
Today while driving Italian Creek from Cement Creek to Taylor Park we spotted this roll over off the Reno Divide trail. From what I can tell it looks like a mini van. What a van was doing in this spot is beyond my imagination. I hope this is not a case of following the GPS and hopping to the road gets better. I also wonder if there were any injuries.
The first photo shows the location of the trail and the second shows the condition of the van.

Does anyone have any additional information on what happened. I have searched the net and have come up empty handed.
Update: Just got off the phone with the Forest Service office in Gunnison and they had no knowledge of the van. I did not speak to the enforcement officer directly and he may have heard about it.
I was on the trail on 09/14 and saw the same thing. I did talk to a ranger and they were not aware of what it is. They were going to have to go up and investigate. Strange that nobody knows anything about it or how it got there!
Per the Gunnison Sheriff’s Office: “This vehicle was stolen from the City of Gunnison in 2009. We did an investigation that lead us to no suspects. We turned the vehicle wreckage over to the Forest Service and they have chosen to leave it. Thank you for checking on the situation. Undersheriff Randy Barnes, Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office, (970) 641-1113.” Yes this Nissan Pathfinder is still there (07-12-15) and yes it still looks “new.”
Any updates on what happened to the van? That’s scary that no one knew about it. I hope the occupants survived.
I was unable to find out any additional information.
Hi, and hope everybody had a nice 4th of July. A group of us just got back from the taylor park area and saw the same blue vehicle and are doing the same thing you did it apears back in sep. I cannot find any information on this vehicle. did you ever figure out what happened here?
thanks! Linda
Today is July 25th. I seen this vehicle a couple of days ago and then revisited the location of the rollover today. With my binoculars I noticed that it is a nissan pathfinder. There is orange tape across the top of the trail indicting where the vehicle went off the trail and the vehicle also has orange tape around it. Under a rock along the trail there is a piece of paper that say “Investigation By the Gunnison County Sheriff Department.”
Today is Sept. 06, 2011. I was there today. I hiked down to the vehicle. It is a Nissan Pathfinder for sure (I was within 5 feet of it). Does not appear to be any blood or human evidence in the car. I hope no one was in it when it rolled bc it was clearly NOT survivable. We would LOVE to know it’s history/story so if anyone knows, post it up here.
Here’s the answer from the Gunnison Sheriff’s Department:

Yesterday was July 6,2012. We were at the Pass and I believe there is a new vehicle that has gone over. It is also blue and an SUV closer to the Crested Butte side and upright. It has not rollen down as far. Appears like a Toyota. Any informatiion????? The Nissan is gone that we saw in2010
Was at location on July 30, 2012. It’s still a Nissan Pathfinder. Hasn’t left!
