Solar Charging System

When our Toyota FJ Cruiser is parked during adventure trips the auxiliary battery system is used to keep our ARB fridge running. To help keep the battery charged I have installed a solar charge system.

The system includes a 40 watt solar panel. The panel is interfaced with the system using a small charge controller.  The panel is installed on the roof rack and wired directly into the wiring system.

Cost:

Panel: $135.00
Charge Controller: $25.00

Time: 2.5 hours

  1. Nice setup! Can you provide more details in the components used (type of pannel, controller, bat. isolator, etc.) and the the hook-up? Thanks and thanks for the posts, Jeff

  2. I must say that I always wanted to do something like this and I am so glad you did. The hook-up steps would really help one that doesn’t have much experience at this sort of project, please. Im new here and own a 2010 FJ. There’re 3 major things that I would like todo to the FJ: Your solar project of course, Dual batteries & an auxiliary gas tank. Anyway, well done.

  3. Where in the system did you wire it in? Is it on the isolator so that it can charge both batteries or do you have it wired to one or the other?
