Extended Range Auxiliary Fuel Tank

I have grown very tired of the small fuel tank in the Toyota FJ Cruiser. Man-A-Fre offers a solution to this problem with their FJ auxiliary fuel tank. The fuel tank is constructed of aluminum and bolts in right in using existing bolt holes.

With this being the only solution for the FJ cruiser I ordered a fuel tank from Man-A-Fre. The installation requires the replacement of the fuel filler stem with a modified version from Man-A-Fre. The new fuel filler has three additional fittings brazed in, a “y” for the fill tube to the new tank, a vent for the new tank, and a fitting for the transfer pump.

The installation also includes a sender and fuel gauge. An electric pump is used for the transfer of the fuel from the auxiliary tank to the primary tank. For my install I am using an existing switch in my switch panel to control the pump.

The install is not for the faint of heart as you will be working with the fuel lines on the FJ. I am REALLY looking forward to the extended range.

The fuel gauge that I have installed is showing empty as 1/4 tank and full as 1/2 a tank. I hope to be able to resolve this issue with the help of Man-A-Fre.

Time: 4.5 HRs

Cost: $1710.00

  1. What size is this additional fuel tank? Do you think at a price tag of $1700.00 this is going to get people from carrying extra 5 gallon gas cans over a 4.5 hour install? I know you can still carry the gas cans and now you have this addition and I do appreciate all of your information on your site.I was just throwing my two cents out there. I have owned a 1979 FJ40 for some time, my wife purchased a 2007 FJ Cruiser about 2 years ago and she just bought me one like hers to shut me up about complaining on my back hurting all the time lol. I guess you can call us total goobers because I just added stickers to both FJC’s to make them look like the cop car (Barricade) from the movie Transformers. I did add “K-9 Unit” also because we always have our dogs with us. I can send you some pictures later on if you are interested in seeing how great a FJC can look as a cop vehicle. My FJ has a 3 inch lift, 33×11.50 Goodyear MTs, Bushwacker pocket fender flares, rock sliders, stealth LED strobe lights, police siren with pa, and the future mods list is longgggg. Some ideas are on board air, roof light bar with off road lights anywhere I can fit them, second battery system (if needed), bumpers, wheels, snorkel, hi-lift jack, spare tire gas can mount…..
    Keep up the good work!

  2. Hey Tomas,

I still think my 14 gallon auxillery aluminum fuel tank is equal to the Man-A-Fre tank. The cost is remarkably lower and the functionality is the same. My tank sits higher in the area and also has a rock guard.

  3. I bought a Moeller Topside 12 gallon tank for $80. It fits the back of the roof rack perfectly. YOu have to stop and sipohn fuel from it so I guess that is a negative. I am building a rechargeable power supply and adding a Holley marine pump and will still be in for less than $300. I just can’t see the $1,400, but that being said it is a pretty cool set up.

  4. This auxiliary fuel tank is a great modification. The leader of the group I run with off road has this tank, and he’s the only one who never worries about having enough fuel. You’ve got a lot of extra capacity, the weight is kept low, and it looks like it doesn’t reduce your ground clearance in the rear at all. Well done! I’m thinking about getting one of these tanks but don’t have the skill (or nerve!) to install it myself, so I may actually drive down to Man-A-Fre to have it done, once up I save up enough allowance. Well done!

  5. I’ve had Man-A-Fre tank for a couple of years. It’s the best mod I’ve done to my FJ, and if I were to buy another FJC, it would be the first thing I’d do to it. Having almost 40 gallons of gas is priceless. The install isn’t THAT tough..actually Man-A-Fre’s wiring instructions were so incorrect they added a few hours onto the install, until I figured that I should ignore their install directions. Installing the fuel gauge was tougher than mounting the tank.

  6. I have an importing agreement working with LRA, for FJ tanks and others. the FJ I prefer is steel tank that replace the main tank and increase capacity to 31 gallons. 5 hour install.

  7. Hi Joseph,
Could you send me the info on the availability of the 31 gallon main tank you installed?
    Thanks, Scott.
