2013 Spring Vacation – The drive out
As planning for our spring vacation started taking shape it looked like we would be revisiting areas we had traveled before. The plan was to head to the South Central part of Utah.

I used a number of resources for planning this trip. These included, National Geographic maps, Google Earth, Backcountry Adventures Utah, as well as a number of other resources. With weather conditions and temperatures up in the air we decided not to for go specific route plans and instead head for the south central Utah region with plans to move as weather dictated.

Day one took us south from Colorado Springs in some of the worst winter driving I have experienced in years. Cars were off the road all over the place with ambulances and fire trucks attending to many of them. It was the type of driving were one does not want to even go close to the brakes. At the top of La Veta pass we finally left the snow and ice behind.

After a long day of driving we finally arrived at our camp for the first night. Sand Island near Bluff Utah is one of the main put ins for the San Juan river. The camp ground has a number of pleasant sites within walking distance of the rock art panel.

Hi Tomas – I first started following your wonderful family adventures when I found your Maze trip account a few years ago. Great stuff! I finally purchased my own FJ last July, put on mods, and am poised for my own Maze/Needles adventure. We leave CA on Thursday for Toroweap, Kaiparowitz Plateau, Burr Trail, Hite, Maze (camping at The Wall & Dollhouse No. 1), Comb Ridge, over Elephant Hill to Needles, Moab, and more. I have been exploring the Colorado Plateau since 1974, but only up to the abilities of my Ford Explorer. Thank you for the inspiration – we will Tread Lightly! All the best, Andy
Have a great trip and stay safe.
