Geronimo Trail from Animas NM to Douglas AZ
On our drive to the Mexico border in Douglas Arizona, LJ and I decided to take a back route from Deming, New Mexico, to Douglas. We headed south from Rockhound State Park on Highway 11 towards Columbus, NM. In Columbus we stopped at Pancho Villa State Park. The visitor center was closed so we went for a short walk around the park. The park documents the attack of Pancho Villa on Columbus, NM.

Leaving Columbus we headed west on Highway 9. This highway parallels the Mexico border and we passed a border patrol about every 4 miles. The drive to Animas took us through the mountains of south western New Mexico.

We headed south from Animas on Highway 338. After about 20 miles the road turns to dirt. In wet condition the road really does become impassable even with 4wd. About 30 miles south of Animas we took a right on CR-C004. This route becomes Geronimo Trail and winds through the Coronado National Forest.

The route has numerous spots to stop and picnic or camp. The stream had a number of clear pools and the trees were starting to leaf out. We really enjoyed the scenic vistas of this route and would recommend it to anyone.

Great trail! You are very correct about not driving it in wet weather! It becomes a long mud hole!
Loved this road although I have not been on it when wet. Not 4X4 but the farm roads south of the 338/Geronimo Trail junction (extreme SW NM) are gorgeous and lonely. I wrote about it:
